Drywall installation (a.k.a. hanging drywall) should be performed according to the manufacturer instructions and exact specifications.
Drywall screws should not break the paper face, instead, the drywall screw head must press under the paper to a snug fit allowing for mud to fill the screw head flush and without creating a bump.
When a screw does break the paper, a new screw must be installed within 1 inch of the failed fastener. This allows that section of the drywall sheet or piece to have the strength needed for a proper installation.
Question:
Why do screw heads break the paper at times or the screw goes too far into the drywall piece?
Answer:
This is because the installer is not experienced with proper screwing techniques and / or doesn’t have the proper tools for correct drywall installation.
A proper “drywall gun” with strength control should be used. Proper drywall guns have the correct screwing tip allowing for such required space above the screw head. However, not having the proper drywall gun shouldn’t forbid you from achieving drywall screwing success. With the use of an inexpensive drywall screwing head or drywall screwing tip, you will achieve success with mostly any screw gun whether made for installing drywall or common screwing use.
